TYRONE NEWHOOK

Tyrone Newhook has been working in journalism for about 20 years. He’s largely produced and written for TV news, current affairs and factual entertainment, and mainly at the national network level at CBC-TV.

Along with having worked for CBC-TV News, one of the most respected news organizations in the world, Tyrone has worked for some of the big TV shows in Canada.

He was a senior-level producer on The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos for the first six amazingly successful seasons, as well as on the popular lifestyle program Steven and Chris during its first season.

Throughout the past two decades, Tyrone has  had some pretty cool professional experiences and challenges:

  1. He started his career with the student press, writing and editing for newspapers while completing a political science degree at Concordia University in Montreal, followed by a graduate journalism degree at Ryerson University in Toronto.

  2. Tyrone was a reporter, editor and photographer for a weekly newspaper in his hometown in Newfoundland.

  3. He flew off to New York where he had landed a gig researching and reporting at New York magazine.

  4. He’s freelanced for Xtra!, Toronto’s feisty, venerable, queer newspaper.

  5. Tyrone was one of a small group of producers who produced Hockey Night in Canada’s Hockey Anthem Challenge, the search for a new hockey anthem to be played during games.

  6. He was a producer and writer for the morning show and late-night talk show at the upstart local TV station in Toronto, Toronto One.

  7. For three years, Tyrone took some time away from the newsroom and entered academia. He was the visiting lecturer of journalism at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. A member of the English Department, he taught university-level courses in newspaper and TV news writing.

  8. While in Kalamazoo, Tyrone also worked for the college’s Center for Western European Studies where he edited academic working papers that scholars from around the world submitted. And he created content for and designed the Center’s publications.
